Hi, I’m Ruby! I am an illustration major at MCAD, Minneapolis College of Art & Design. My interests lie in creating surface designs and illustrations for products, and strive to create colorful and unique designs that people interact with on a daily basis and can function as outward expressions of personality and decoration.
I create vector illustrations focused on color and shape, often with vast colorful palettes and thoughtful use of color blocking to depict light and detail. My versatile illustrations are created with use in mind, and it is important to me to create work that can be applied to a wide variety of surfaces and products.

Kidzibits Inc Design Internship
Kidzibits is a Minneapolis company specializing in exhibit design, development, and fabrication. Their educational, interactive and kid-friendly work can be seen in children’s museums, nature centers, zoos and science centers nation wide. During my time at Kidzibits, I assisted in graphics development of new exhibits for the Minnesota Children’s Museum, and the Discovery Depot Children’s Museum in Galesburg, IL.
I aided in formatting and printing prep for graphics, including the creation of a pattern covered play table with my own original pattern design for a new farm exhibit for Discovery Depot.
I also was tasked with preparing graphics for printing and exhibit integration for two new themed traveling exhibits under a licensing agreement with PBS Kids “Wild Kratts” TV program, for the Minnesota Children’s Museum.

Diabetic Monitor Stickers
I created these designs for ExpressionMed, who produces decorative medical tapes for Dexcom continous glucose monitoring systems for diabetes management. ExpressionMed’s end users are mostly kids, who’s parents purchase the decorative tapes for them as to get them excited about wearing a glucose monitor instead of it being scary. My designs with bright colors and playful content are made to appeal to kids and their parents and bring a fun punch of personality to medical devices. (Created in Adobe Illustrator)

She Kills Monsters
“Ruby Segal portrays the heroic Tilius the Paladin, Tilly’s D&D alter ego, perfectly. She’s quirky, skipping about the stage in full armor, but retains the youth that her character never got the chance to grow out of. Segal also shines in moments where the play’s comedy slows down into heartfelt moments of drama.”
My most recent acting work to date was in Normandale Community College Theatre’s production of “She Kills Monsters”, a kick-ass contemporary one act play about Dungeons & Dragons. I played the leading role of Tilly Evans/ Tillius the Paladin, the younger sister of Agnes Evans who tragically died at age 16 and whom her sister is now getting to magically reconnect with through Tilly’s old D&D games. It was so much fun being decked out in full armor, kicking ass and slaying monsters left & right with intricate stage combat and sword work. My performance earned me a nomination for the Irene Ryans Acting scholarship competition, awarded through the Kennedy Center for Performing Arts College Theatre Festival. The production also earned an encore performance in Des Moines at the Region 5 Kennedy Center College Theatre festival for an audience for 1,200.
Halloween is my favorite holiday of the year and I love making my own creative costumes every year. This year, in honor of the halloween season, I decided to create an autumn inspired woodland fairy costume. The costume has four parts to it, the skirt, top, corset belt, and a bag.
For the skirt I started with a red petticoat as the base and then started to layer multicolor lycra, netting, and tulle ‘leaves’ on top of it. Once I had enough layers and colors mixed in to mask the petticoat, I started placing the fake leaves. For the top, I took a green tank top and meticulously hot glued leaves and small cut-outs of tulle and netting all over the top half and sleeves. For the corset belt, I cut three panels of faux leather, and punched and reinforced holes for the laces. I laced the panels together using suede cording so the laces were on each side of my waist, and then the front lace-up that you’d do to get in and out of it. I also boned each corset panel with cardboard, which actually worked really well and helped it keep its shape and not wrinkle.
Finally, for practicality, I took a small plain rectangular cloth purse and recovered it and hot glued some leaves and a fun little pumpkin on to it so that it would blend into my outfit. I then had a nice little hidden waist satchel to put my phone in!
